The World Trade Center was built to draw attention to New York City and to stand as a symbol of that city’s place in the global community. It became a symbol not only of New York, but also of American culture and prestige. Tragically, the World Trade Center’s success as a symbol contributed to its downfall when terrorists targeted it for destruction on September 11, 2001.
